Jargon - Blackjack

 

Anchor box – the box where the cards are first dealt.

Basic strategy – a playing strategy that reduces the house advantage.

Break – a score over twenty-one.

Blackjack – a score of twenty-one made with an Ace and any other card worth ten.

Burn cards – cards that are discarded without being seen by the players.

Bust – a score over twenty-one.

Card counting – a technique for reducing the house advantage.

Cut card – blank card used for cutting cards. After cutting the cards, the dealer inserts the blank card towards the end of the shoe. When the bank card is reached, the cards are reshuffled. 

Draw – take another card.

First base – the player who is dealt cards first is sitting at first base (the same as the anchor box.

Hard hand – a score of twelve or above.

Heads up –  playing alone at a table.

Hit – take another card.

Hole card – dealer’s face-down card.

Natural – a hand that scores twenty-one with the first two cards.

Pair – two cards of the same value, for example two threes.

Pass – take no further cards (stand).

Push – a bet that is tied.

Sabot – box where cards are placed for shuffling.

Shoe – box where cards are placed for shuffling.

Stiff hand – a score of twelve to sixteen.

Soft hand – a score of eleven or less meaning a card can be drawn without busting.

Stand – take no further cards.
